On the Dylan show :To be honest , it is hard to say what caused The Dead, or Garcia to be excluded .
Were they asked ? Maybe they were already committed ? I know that Dylan had nothing to do with the choice of performers, some I believe he was not that excited about . He was in a bad place at the time, and sort of resented the "Bob Dylan , this WAS you life " feel .
I was only a buyer at a Tower Records, at the time , but even after "Touch of Grey", any respect they got from the record company types was grudging . It was like "hey , even a blind pig finds an acorn, once in a while ". The Dead were like from another planet , they just didn't get it . Maybe it was a good thing they were excluded , they would have got one song ( would they have to have their own equipment ?) and they were rarely able to dependably get going from a cold start . Maybe a Garcia Weir , Dylan acoustic deal ( ugh, you ever see the Live Aid performance with,Dylan Keith Richards and Woody , best forgotten ).
Dylan payed the Dead the ultimate compliment by actually asking to join the band , after his Forum with them n 89 ! Phil ( wisely ) vetoed it .
